Extendable device for network applications (Router, NAS, mini server etc)

One thing I think would be good is a device designed for network orientated applications, such as custom routers.

Key thing with this would be a device restricted to a core set of connections on one side of board, no more (particularly no kind of video output), like:

Ethernet x2, one with connector on back, one as a header
USB
Sata
Serial header
Headers for select number of extensions...

Extensions and optional extras:
Ethernet switch, designed to be connected to boards header ethernet connection
Wifi card
RS232/RJ45 sockets to connect to relevant headers...
Box than can provides space for optional extras

Add no more functionality than this! Typical functions for this include:
Router (as some already want to make)
NAS
VPN Gateway
Print/scan server
Router (meeting a few peoples requests
Low end (low power) purpose built headless servers
