MIIDI Shield REV A w/UNO

Hi I just received this shield and I was wondering if you have any working examples I could smoke test it with?  It appears to be getting power (5v) from the Arduino Uno R3, but when I hook up a MIDI device to it, I noticed the LEDs do not light up, what's the function of the LEDs?

ok, so I realized that I have to tell it to light up the LEDs when I want, is that correct?  I'm still new to this.

I can get the LEDs to work and that's all.  I've tried multiple examples given online and it doesn't appear to send or receive MIDI at all.  Does this product work for anyone else?
