Title: Cannot mount an external HDD (WD Elements)
Post by: fperrad on November 25, 2017, 06:57:55 PM
After plug it on USB, I show it with `lsusb`:
Bus 001 Device 020: ID 1058:25a2 Western Digital Technologies, Inc.

but the device driver /dev/sda is not created, and the drive is not mounted

Is the hard disk externally powered? If not, then probably the USB can't power it properly and it shuts down at some point. Try with the other USB port. One of the USB ports provides a little bit more current. Even if it works with the other USB port it might be a bad idea to power the HDD from the USB, since insufficient current can damage the hard disk. Consider externally powered disk or externally powered USB hub, between the laptop and the disk.

Best regards,

Thanks, fixed with an external power supply.
