Title: Are MSP430G2xx3 Devices supported by MSP430-JTAG-ISO-MK2 ?
Post by: jlu on January 25, 2016, 06:03:38 PM
Hi,

I've purchased MSP430-JTAG-ISO-MK2. Now I want to program MSP430G2513/2553/2403 ... and so on.
In the supported MCU List there is an entry "MSP430G2xx3", so I thought these Devices are supported.

I'm trying to connect with SBW, but in Debugger mode the Programmer is telling me that no MCU is connected.
It is showing the correct voltage of 2,9V because my board is Powered by an external Power source.

I can connect to the Debugger with rowley crossstudio, but it cannot connect to the MCU

Are these MCU's not supported or is there maybe only JTAG supported?

Best regards
Jörg

Hey,

Double-check your hardware connections. The SBW interface of our MSP430 boards and debuggers is slightly different that the proposed one.

The Spy-Bi-Wire (2-wire programming) comparison: https://www.olimex.com/Products/MSP430/JTAG/_resources/SPY-BI-WIRE-CONNECTION.jpg (https://www.olimex.com/Products/MSP430/JTAG/_resources/SPY-BI-WIRE-CONNECTION.jpg)

This is is the TI one: http://e2e.ti.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/1024x768/__key/CommunityServer-Discussions-Components-Files/166/3666.spybiwire.jpg (http://e2e.ti.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/1024x768/__key/CommunityServer-Discussions-Components-Files/166/3666.spybiwire.jpg)

Note the RST/NMI line pins in each case.

I also recommend you to check one of our boards with similar microcontroller to understand the connections better. For example, the schematic of MSP430-HG2231: https://www.olimex.com/Products/MSP430/Header/MSP430-HG2231/resources/MSP430-HG2231-schematic.pdf (https://www.olimex.com/Products/MSP430/Header/MSP430-HG2231/resources/MSP430-HG2231-schematic.pdf)

Yes! it works now!
Pin 1 and 11 was switched. Also Pin 7 have to be connected in my case.
Is there a reason why you're not sticking to the TI standard? This dosn't make any sense to me...
Debugging is still not working, but I only need it for stand-alone programming. So it's fine for me now.

Hey,

Yes, there is a reason. We didn't like that the RST/NMI pin changes its location in JTAG and SBW. In the original Texas 14-pin JTAG design RST/NMI is pin #11; and in the original Texas 14-pin SBW design RST/NMI strangely goes to pin #1. In our design RST/NMI is always at pin #11.
