I have an A13 board (rev F) using the Debian boot from SD card (purchased).
I've tried a couple USB sound cards that work fine on my Rpi B+ running a modified Ubuntu. If I try
aplay -l
I get
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: sunxicodec [sunxi-CODEC], device 0: M1 PCM [sunxi PCM]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
with which I can output audio from the A13's built-in audio jacks. If I list my USB devices:
lsusb
I see my card recognized in the output:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a92:0031 EGO SYStems, Inc. GIGAPortAG
This is a USB-Audio device and should not require any special drivers beyond USB Audio. A verbose listing indicates that it is enumerated as an audio device. But I cannot find any good reference on how to get ALSA to recognize it so I can use it! Any thoughts?
Here is the verbose listing from lsusb, for what it is worth:

you have to add the module in the kernel, "snd_usb_audio" module works for most usb audio cards
I've been searching for a guide on how to do this, and I'm not entirely clear on what I need to download and install to add this module - or will I need to recompile the kernel? I'm kind of a dilletante when it comes to this level of *nix hacking!
recompile the kernel.
https://olimex.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/building-debian-linux-bootable-sd-card-with-hardware-accelerated-video-decoding-and-kernel-3-4-for-a13-olinuxino/
"1. Setup of the toolchain" then skip to "3.Building kernel sources for A13-OLinuXino"
when you get to # make ARCH=arm menuconfig
select
Device Drivers ---> Sound card support ---> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ---> USB sound devices -->
select "< > USB Audio/MIDI driver" and press the spacebar to get "<M> USB Audio/MIDI driver"
exit back back and safe the configuration.
then finish with
make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf- -j4 uImage
make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf- -j4 INSTALL_MOD_PATH=out modules
make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf- -j4 INSTALL_MOD_PATH=out modules_install
then "6. Write kernel uImage you build to the SD-card"
then "8. Debian rootfs" but just the part where they describe where to copy the kernel modules.
