Hi Gerard, you can automatically start lightdm by activating it in the runlevels 2,3,4,5
To do this install sysv-rc-conf and use it to configure the services you want automatically start in the runlevels

sysv-rc-conf is installed and lightdm is set for levels 2,3,4,5 but at the boot i have still the console
A 20 tty1
A20 login:
lightdm or lightdm-greeter does not start automatically  ??????

thanks for your help

I checked on my board and I discovered the same issue...(usually I use ssh)
I resolved reconfiguring lightdm with sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

I hope it works for you too
