Title: Super cap backed RTC.
Post by: onefang on July 16, 2014, 06:24:44 PM
I'll copy what I just wrote in your blog.

I really don't understand why all of your computer boards that include an RTC fail to include any sort of backup power supply, only the UEXT one includes a battery. On top of that. I don't understand why the industry in general only uses batteries, I was putting super caps in hardware designs decades ago, these days it's all you would need to keep an RTC running.

So first idea - UEXT based RTC with a super cap instead of a battery.

Second idea - All boards with an RTC on them to be updated to include some sort of backup power, preferably a super cap.

+1 for me.

Lack of RTC in general is problematic, especially in non internet connected or offgrid applications. Having it onboard with a super cap would make these boards suitable for many more applications.

Also, the current RTC UEXT-module, when connected to an A10-LIME, would that fit in the current available housing/enclosure?
